About Dr. Richard J. Bellucci
The Bellucci Symposium, held annually by the Translational Hearing Center (THC) and the School
of Medicine at Creighton University, is sponsored by the Bellucci DePaoli Family Foundation.
Alumnus Dr. Richard J. Bellucci, MD ’42, was a national leader in the utilization of ear surgical techniques to treat conductive hearing loss.
Dr. Bellucci was Chair of otolaryngology at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital (1963-79) and Chairman of otolaryngology at New York Medical College (1966-80), completing his residency at the former. "The biggest satisfaction was to have a patient with restoration of hearing"- Dr. Bellucci
Dr. Bellucci is best known for a surgical operation he helped pioneer, the stapedectomy, and as the inventor of the surgical tool used during this operation: the Bellucci Micro Ear Scissors. The operation was developed in the late 1950s and was one of the first uses of a microscope during surgery. During the procedure, the stapes (a tiny bone in the ear) is removed and replaced by a prosthetic device, gifting patients with certain types of hearing loss to regain their hearing.
Dr. Bellucci authored more than 100 scientific papers plus three books on ear surgery during his lifetime, passing on December 22, 2005. He was a member
of 23 medical societies and a recipient of many noteworthy honors. He was recognized by the New York Archdiocesan Italian Apostalate for providing medical treatment to immigrants. For helping restore the hearing of former soldiers, two of these honors include a Vatican appointment as a Master
Knight of Malta and a Cavaliere de Merito of Italy. Creighton University also conferred upon him its Alumni Achievement Citation in 2004 (pictured right).
His mission in starting the Bellucci DePaoli Foundation was to ensure the important work of hearing restoration continues. The Foundation offers
stipends to impressive PhD candidates, the Bellucci Award which is given to young investigators who are achieving important contributions in auditory research, plus support for acquiring necessary research equipment.
The Biomedical Sciences department of his alma mater works hard everyday
to preserve his legacy.
